01Who lives in Menorca, and what they need
Menorca's foreign community is mainly residential. There are British residents who settled on the island decades ago, retirees from other countries who choose Menorca for its quiet pace, families with their own homes in Maó, Ciutadella or the inland villages, and partners of Spanish or European citizens.
That is why well-prepared renewals matter so much here, together with non-lucrative residence, the family member card for partners of Spanish or EU citizens, the move to long-term residence and the documentation of British nationals under the Withdrawal Agreement.
02How we handle a Menorca case online
Our service is online across Spain, islands included. As registered Spanish lawyers we file your application through the electronic portal, with no need for an appointment at C/ Sant Sebastià, which helps in the Balearics, where appointments per digital certificate are limited. Notifications are also delivered electronically.
You only need to travel for your TIE at the Maó police station. For any other one-off in-person step on the island we work with a network of local partners.
- First meeting by video call, in English or Spanish.
- Review of your situation, deadlines and documents.
- Document checklist, sworn translations and apostilles.
- Electronic filing with the Balearic Islands Immigration Office.
- Guidance for the Maó police appointment and collecting your TIE.
03Renewals without surprises
On an island like Menorca, many cases are renewals rather than first applications. A renewal can be filed in the sixty days before your card expires or in the ninety days after, and filing on time extends your permit while the decision is pending.
We review your financial means, health insurance, census registration and, if you have spent time outside Spain, your absences, which can affect the continuity of your residence. If you already meet the five-year requirement, we consider moving straight to long-term residence.
04Non-lucrative residence for island life
If you want to settle in Menorca on your own income without working in Spain, the route is non-lucrative residence. The first permit is applied for as a visa at the Spanish consulate where you live; renewals are later filed with the Balearic Islands Immigration Office.
We review the required financial means, health insurance with no co-payments and your housing documents before you attend the consulate.
05British nationals in Menorca
British nationals who were resident in Menorca before 1 January 2021 hold a Withdrawal Agreement TIE. Renewals, replacements and changes of address are handled at the Maó police station, by appointment. If you were living on the island then but never registered, we review what evidence of residence you have kept.
There is no British consulate in Menorca: the island is covered by the consulate in Palma, which sees the public by appointment only. If your partner is Spanish or an EU citizen, we also consider the family member card.
06Families, couples and healthcare
If you are not married, registering with the Balearic Register of Stable Couples helps evidence the relationship for the family member card; both partners must be registered as resident in the islands and show one year of living together.
Public healthcare is provided by the Balearic Health Service (IB-Salut). Access depends on your situation: paying Spanish social security, being a pensioner with a recognised entitlement or, for non-lucrative residence, holding private insurance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to go to Palma for my immigration case?
No. Menorca has its own immigration desk in Maó and, in any case, we file through the electronic portal. You only attend the Maó police station for your TIE.
I live in Ciutadella. Can I get my TIE at the local police station?
According to the Government Delegation, TIE issuance in Menorca is handled by the Maó police station. The Ciutadella station deals with other matters, such as invitation letters.
My card expires in a few weeks. Is there still time?
You can renew in the sixty days before expiry or the ninety days after. The sooner you instruct us, the more time we have to gather and check your documents.
I am British and have lived in Menorca since before Brexit. Do I need to do anything?
If you already hold the Withdrawal Agreement TIE, you only need to renew it when due. If you never registered, we review your evidence of residence before 2021 and the most suitable route.
My husband is Spanish and we live in Maó. Which card applies to me?
The family member card for relatives of Spanish citizens. We prepare and file it online with the Balearic Islands Immigration Office; you only attend the Maó police station for fingerprints.
Do I need a lawyer based in Menorca?
No. A registered Spanish lawyer can act anywhere in Spain and the process is electronic. We work online, by video call; for one-off in-person steps on the island we work with local partners.
