01How we handle a Zaragoza case without you travelling

Most of an immigration application is a matter of gathering certificates, having them translated, checking them against the Immigration Regulations (Royal Decree 1155/2024) and filing them in good order. None of that requires you and your lawyer to be in the same city.

We work online throughout Spain. For Zaragoza we follow the same method as in any other province: an initial video call to decide the route, a document checklist written for your situation, a review of every document before filing, and electronic filing under our professional certificate. We keep you informed of any request for further information and of the decision.

If something has to be done in person and you cannot do it yourself, we cover it through our network of collaborating professionals.

02The Immigration Office in Zaragoza

The Immigration Office of the Government Sub-delegation is on Calle Obispo Covarrubias. According to the Government Delegation in Aragon, it handles employed and self-employed residence and work permits, residence for research, non-lucrative residence, family reunification, long-term residence, student stays, changes of status, residence cards for family members of EU citizens and appeals, among other procedures.

Outside the summer months the office opens on Monday to Thursday afternoons. Even so, when a lawyer acts for you the application does not go through the counter: it is registered on the electronic portal and followed online, for instance through the application status service that the Delegation itself recommends.

03Fingerprints and residence card in Zaragoza province

Once your permit is granted, the foreigner identity card (TIE) is issued by the National Police, by appointment. The Government Delegation refers police immigration matters to the Provincial Immigration and Borders Brigade and the Foreigners Documentation Unit. The official police office finder lists TIE issuing at these locations:

  • Provincial Immigration and Borders Brigade: Avenida de Valencia, 50, Zaragoza.
  • Calatayud police station: Calle Coral Bilbilitana, 8.

04Who contacts us from Zaragoza

Zaragoza combines a strong logistics sector, thanks to its position between Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and the Basque Country, with an automotive industry built around the Figueruelas car plant and its suppliers. Many of our enquiries come from there: engineers, operations managers and specialists joining an Aragonese company or seconded by their group from abroad.

For them we usually look at Law 14/2013, handled by the Large Companies Unit regardless of the province of destination: highly qualified professional, intra-company transfer or EU Blue Card, depending on the contract and career history.

The University of Zaragoza also attracts undergraduate, master's and doctoral students from outside the EU. Undergraduate and master's students need a student stay, while doctoral candidates apply as researchers with the UGE. We help with the stay, its extension and, once studies end, the move to a residence and work permit if they find a job.

05Aragonese specifics worth knowing

Family reunification requires proof of adequate housing. The Regulations call for a report from the regional government or, where the region has delegated it, from the town hall, and it cannot be more than six months old when the application is filed. It pays to request it early.

Aragon has its own rules on unmarried stable couples, set out in the Aragonese Code of Foral Law. According to the Government of Aragon, a stable couple exists after at least two years of uninterrupted cohabitation or when it has been formed by public deed before a notary, and it can be entered in the Administrative Register of Unmarried Stable Couples. If you are the partner of an EU or Spanish citizen, that registration helps evidence the relationship.

06Consulates for British and American nationals in Aragon

There is no British consulate in Zaragoza. According to gov.uk, the Consulate General in Barcelona covers Catalonia, Aragon and Andorra, by appointment only. You will need it for British passports or documents, not for your Spanish residence, which is a matter for the Spanish authorities.

US citizens living in Aragon are served by the US Consulate General in Barcelona. Visas to live or work in Spain are applied for at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence, not in Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to go to the Immigration Office on Calle Obispo Covarrubias?

No. As lawyers we file through the electronic portal, which is compulsory for professionals, so you do not need a counter appointment. Your only visit in person is usually the fingerprint appointment at the Brigade on Avenida de Valencia or in Calatayud.

A logistics or automotive company in Zaragoza is hiring me. Which permit do I need?

It depends on your qualifications, the role and whether you already work for the group outside Spain. The usual options are highly qualified professional, EU Blue Card, intra-company transfer or a standard employee permit. We decide with your contract in hand.

I am coming to do a master's at the University of Zaragoza. What do I need?

Usually a student visa from the Spanish consulate in your country and, if your stay exceeds six months, a TIE in Zaragoza. In some cases the student stay can be requested from within Spain. We review your situation, enrolment and the required financial means.

I live in Calatayud. Do I have to go to Zaragoza for fingerprints?

Not necessarily. The official police office finder lists TIE issuing at the Calatayud police station. You choose the office when booking, subject to availability.

Can I apply for Spanish citizenship from Zaragoza?

Yes. Citizenship by residence is handled by the Ministry of Justice electronically, whatever your province. We check that you meet the period of legal residence that applies to you, prepare the file and support you through to the oath.

Do you have an office in Zaragoza?

No. We work online throughout Spain, by video call. If your case needs a one-off task in person, our network of collaborating professionals covers it.
